Panthers Bring the "Ship" Home in B-Ball
posted 03/05/2012

My, my, my... The Gum Springs 7th grade team has participated in a season to remember. After beginning the season with only 2 wins and 4 losses, few expected the Panther boys to make some noise the rest of the season. However, with the exceptional coaching by Head Coach Lamont Sanders and Asst. Coach Mark Gibson, the Panthers finished out the season winning 6 out of the last 8 games. Even in the 2 losses during that tremendous streak, you can hear Coach Lamont say very clearly, "we should've won those games." They finished the season 8-6 with a 3rd seed in the playoffs.

They began their quest to the championship by defeating Ft. Belvoir on a Sunday afternoon. That win placed them in the a Semi-Final matchup with Arlington, a team which they lost to twice in the regular season. The odds were stacked against them. However, with the determination of hard playing by each player wearing the blue and wite, they pulled off the upset with a score of 46-41. They completed their playoff run with the Championship Game against Mercer. With a never say die attitude, the Gum Spring Panthers fought hard and completed the season winning the FCYBL 7th grade Div. 3 Championship. We want to thank each player for representing the blue and white, each parent and fan who continued to support the team, and to our coaches for all that they have done to provide a teaching and winning atmosphere.

As we celebrate our boys team for winning the championship, we have 2 of our very own players who were selected to the All League Team. We want to give a big CONGRATULATIONS to Asavion Coleman and Elijah Thomas on a job well done.

Not only do we celebrate our 2 boys for making the All League Team, we celebrate a coach who has been recognized for his hard work and dedication. The Boys 7th Grade Division 3 Coach of the Year has been awarded to Head Coach Lamont Sanders! We know that he is a dedicated coach to this program and our kids. He is well deserving of it.

2 TEAMS TO THE "SHIP", 1 BRINGS IT BACK HOME!!!

What a beautiful day it was on Saturday morning for the Gum Springs Community. The people came out to support the Anklebiter Panthers and 75 pound in their championship games.

The Anklebiters, led by Coach Price, Coach Darrell, and Team Dad Richard, defeated the Lee-Franconia Wolverines 13-0. Oh how sweet it was to not only defeated the Wolverines who were undefeated, but it was even sweeter that the Panther defense did not allow them to score a single point. Each Panther player played with determination and you can hear the fans chanting their team on. This was truly a celebration completed by hearing Coach Price out, "GUM SPRINGS!!!"

In the other Championship Game, our 75 pound team was defeated by the Reston Seahawks 19-0. The Panthers did an excellent job of never giving up. They played with determination and we are all very proud of them. Next year, it will be a different outcome.
